Speakers: Liz Wiseman, Author and Executive Advisor

Are you a genius or a genius maker? We've all had experience with two dramatically different types of leaders. The first type drains intelligence, energy, and capability from the people around them and always needs to be the smartest person in the room. These are the idea killers, the energy sappers, the diminishers of talent and commitment. On the other side of the spectrum are leaders who use their intelligence to amplify the smarts and capabilities of the people around them. When these leaders walk into a room, light bulbs go off over people's heads; ideas flow and problems get solved. These are the leaders who inspire employees to stretch themselves and get more from other people. These are the Multipliers. And the world needs more of them, especially now when leaders are expected to do more with less. In this highly engaging talk, Liz Wiseman will share the research behind Multipliers and illustrate the resoundingly positive and profitable effect these Multipliers have on organizations - how they get more done with fewer resources, develop and attract talent, and cultivate new ideas and energy to drive organizational change and innovation. She'll introduce the five disciplines that distinguish Multipliers from Diminishers and provide practice tips for leading like a Multiplier. What could your organization accomplish with access to all the intelligence that sits inside it?

Five Reasons To Celebrate The Holidays With As Much Passion And Fervor As Ever Before.

Amara, a crowd source subtitling platform that engages volunteers from around the world to translate online videos, is being adopted by Coursera and Khan Academy, to make academic video content globally accessible.

Launched in 2010, Amara has already added more than 200,000 subtitles in 100 different languages to online videos.

Coursera recently reached 1 million users, and its volunteer translation community is working to subtitle more than 1,200 college lectures. Some lectures are already available in more than 10 languages — a number that is quickly growing.

Cobham has been awarded a contract by Embraer Defense and Security worth some $30 million, to develop and supply the Auxiliary Fuselage Fuel Tank (AFFT) for the KC-390 tanker aircraft.

Cobham’s AFFT will enable the aircraft’s core mission capabilities, including increased range for search and rescue operations and maximized fuel offload for air-to-air refueling. The Brazilian Air Force is the launch customer for the KC-390, which is scheduled to enter service in 2015. Embraer expects to secure significant additional orders for the KC-390 from export customers.

The results of a new PowerPhone study shows that the proportion of 9-1-1 personnel taking their training online continues to grow and that perceptions are positive.

The “Survey of Online Learning in Emergency Communications” reveals that 68% of public safety personnel took at least one online course in 2012, a number that’s expected to rise to 78% over the next year. And nearly all respondents (90%) felt online learning was important to their agency’s long-term training plan.

“E-learning is not going away,” says Chris Salafia, president and CEO of PowerPhone. “It’s a game changer.”

Key report findings:

>> The majority rated their prior e-learning experiences as about the same as face-to-face learning.

>> Overwhelmingly, the largest benefit emergency communicators cited for online learning was the convenience of anywhere, anytime training, followed by easier scheduling.

>> Participants thought that up-to-date audio and video were the most important elements of a well-designed online course.

>> 62% of emergency communicators saw a significant improvement in knowledge following their online training.

“A well-designed online course can and should integrate peer networking and instructor accessibility into the curriculum,” says Dr. Gary Moore, PowerPhone’s director of Learning. “We need to be in the Web 2.0 landscape and encourage the active participation and engagement of our students for their learning to be of value.”

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has named Melissa Starinsky, a member of the Senior Executive Service, to serve as Chancellor of the VA Acquisition Academy (VAAA).

Frye. “She brings a wealth of experience in acquisition, contracting, strategic workforce planning, organizational development, resource allocation, and talent and performance management. Her passion for developing employees into highly-trained and skilled professionals makes her well-suited for this position.”

Starinsky previously served as a member of the Senior Executive Service as the deputy director of the Office of Acquisition and Grants Management for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services where she was responsible for overseeing the execution of more than $8 billion annually in discretionary contract, grant, and interagency spend.

Starinsky will oversee the Acquisition Internship School, the Program Management School, the Contracting Professional School, the Facilities Management School, and the Supply Chain Management School.
