Elearning! and Government Elearning! magazines, the industry voices of the enterprise learning and workforce technology market, has announced that the Best of Elearning! Awards 2014 voting is now open. Celebrating 10 years of success, The Best of Elearning! Awards recognizes best-in-class solutions across 27 product and services categories.

Executives leveraging learning and workplace technologies, including readers, practitioners, and community members from both the private and public sectors, are invited to cast their vote for best-in-class solutions starting March 15.

There is no “short list” of brands from which to select. All 100% of the nominations are placed by users in an open format. Unlike other awards events, there is no fee to nominate a solutions provider. The only requirement is that the nominations be made by users of learning and workplace technologies.  Winners of selected categories will be revealed at the Enterprise Learning! Conference & Expo (ELCE) on August 27, 2014, and at the Enterprise Learning! Summit on December 4, 2014.

“There are many new features of this year’s awards program,” said Catherine Upton, Group Publisher, Elearning! Media Group. “Every year our industry evolves, and we add new categories to reflect the innovation. This year, we added Best MOOC Platform, Best Multi-Featured E-learning Solution and two highly distinguished honors for Best New Product of The Year and Best Solution Overall.”

Since 2004, The Best of Elearning! and Elearning! Media Group has honored more than 300 products and services nominated by more than 25,000 executives. In 2011, the awards moved to the Enterprise Learning! Conference & Expo (ELCE), where the industry continues to recognize and honor excellence.

In 2014, ELCE also offers attendees a much more comprehensive view of solutions that have significant impact.  ELCE 2014 hosts a dedicated conference track on Technology at Work, as well as two full day pre-conference programs on “Content Solutions Selection” and “Learning & Talent System Selection.” In partnership with selected solution providers and their Global 2500 clients, executives can see, share and learn how to best source, evaluate, deploy and measure impact of these investments.

The Voting Process

Readers, practitioners and community members are invited to nominate and vote for products and solutions via Elearning! Media Group’s online ballot.  The nomination period is March 15 through May 1, 2014 and ballots can be cast at: http://www.2elearning.com/Best_of_Elearning!_Awards_2014.html

New Vote Counting Process

In addition to the four new categories added to the 2014 ballot, The Best of Elearning! ballot counting process is being modified. In 2014, a single product can be recognized only in its most relevant category. For example, an e-learning development tool may have a content management element, as well as Web meeting capability. However, at the core, it is an e-learning development tool and would qualify for that category over the others.

“We expect many votes this year with the new format, new categories and rate of innovation in the marketplace,” said Richard Acello, Editorial Director, Elearning! Media Group. “In previous years we processed more than 4,000 nominations, and we expect an even higher volume this year. We look forward to sharing what buyers and users think about these solutions at upcoming events and in the annual December awards issue of Elearning! Magazine. “

Most people not familiar with Japanese culture don’t know what bento boxes are. And even if they do, they don’t know that the concept can be applied to corporate learning.

But it can. What are bento boxes, then? “Japanese culture has something called a bento box, a small little box,” notes Conrad Cone, Director of Talent Development for Active Network, who’s based half-a-world away from the Orient in British Columbia, Canada. “It houses small snack-size bites of sushi. I was at a Japanese restaurant and thought, ‘Tere’s something to this.’ It’s a learning portal where we take thousands of e-learning content assets and flter them into little digestible boxes.”

Headquartered in San Diego, Calif., Active Network has more than 3,300 employees in 25 offices worldwide, many of whom have been brought on as part of the 50-plus acquisitions since the company’s inception in 1999. Its mission is to help more than 50,000 global clients use cloud technology more effectively.

In March, 2010, Active Network hired Cone as its frst talent development manager. He knew immediately what was needed: a blended talent development program with a strong e-learning component that could be accessed 24/7 from any of its offices globally. But there were some lessons he had to learn before coming to his “bento box moment."

Cone's team immediately purchased all of the very best e-learning content from all of the vendors in the marketplace at the time. They gave their employees lots of options, thinking they were creating an e-learning buffet of everything an employee could want.

But employees had been given too many choices. They were overwhelmed. The company was a full year into Cone's e-learning strategy with a custom LMS and every e-learning resources available, but there was near zero adoption."

“Was the strategy successful?” Cone asked imself. Te answer was a resounding “No.”

Today, Cone remembers his mistake. “Initially did an exhaustive search, because we wanted to make sure we had a really ood global development program in place. We looked at 30 e-learning companies. It was almost like going into a candy tore as a kid and being overwhelmed with the selection. We made a lot of mistakes, chose a lot of bright shiny objects.

“We built a system with analytics, manager tools and a real flashy, sexy cool library. We thought people would be so excited to go to the library — but they did not come. They’d be excited, but when they searched for a topic, they were inundated by screen after screen, list after list, all the assets that our vendors had tagged. They got overwhelmed, closed the LMS, and never came back. The lesson we learned is that even if you build and populate it with what you think is great stuff, you’ve got to find a way to help the user funnel the search or options, so topics are easy to find. That was our biggest lesson. Even with all of the money we were spending, the system was gathering dust.”

THE EPIPHANY

Then came his restaurant epiphany. “Te bento box learning strategy was just an idea that made sense, and when we applied it, we saw the light bulbs go off for employees,” Cone says.

The strategy is built around mobile- friendly bento boxes in Active Network’s most popular subject topics via a program and application called “Take Five a Day.” The app contains job and program- specific learning assets, all five minutes in length or less. The challenge to employees is to spend five minutes a day “building their talent greatness,” using the app as the prime driver of this. And the objection of not enough time cannot be used when you have personalized resources available to you on any device that can be consumed so quickly.

Today, bento boxes use Skillsof’s Leadership Advantage and Knowledge Center editor tools to create custom portals packed with snack-sized learning assets. Te boxes use both Skillsof and Active Network proprietary content with a balanced mix of formal, infor- mal and social learning. Cone and his team update the bento box content monthly, based on the types of assets getting the most use.

“Our new strategy really is based on using the bento box to house formal learning curriculum, and then complement and enhance it with deeply aligned social and informal learning activities,” Cone notes.

Te response to the bento-box strategy has been satisfying. Before bento boxes, 40 percent of the employee base took a self- selected course and averaged 4.51 course completions. Afer bento boxes, 60 percent of employees got involved and averaged 6.79 course completions.

A COMPLETE STRATEGY

Active Network‘s current strategy embeds social-based learning, user-generated YouTube-style learning videos, a Facebook- style user experience, and visual search en- gines that have a familiar look and feel for Millennial employees.

Its formal curriculum comes from ven- dors’ videos, executive summaries, books and other sources. Its informal curriculum includes experiential activities and group ac- tivities that apply learning to informal learning, and social-based learning (questions that can be answered through blog posts).

“And the bento boxes are like checkerboard grids with eight to 10 compartments, never stale, always fresh,” Cone observes.

Gamifcation and mobile apps have been added, so that learning has been propelled from being something that employees “didn’t have time for” to being part of the changing culture. Ubiquitous access and ongoing accessibility, coupled with the idea that learning is continuous and can be done anywhere (in a short time frame) is making ongoing self development an idea that is more readily being adopted. Employees know that they can go to a custom portal, specifc to their job role, project or initiative, and fnd engaging content as well as peer connection to get fast answers or real- time support for on-the-job learning.

FOCUS ON LEADERSHIP

Bento boxes were piloted in creating a high-potential leader program portal. To prepare, nine core competencies were defined. Each competency aligned to an existing module within Skillsoft’s Leadership Advantage.

“Every month, learners see a new mod- ule,” Cone says. “Tey see goal-setting in September, strategic planning in October, and so on. We limited the amount of content so not only is it not overwhelming, but it is presented in a way that reinforces the skill or competency we want to build. The program also includes formal mentoring and coaching, virtual case studies and special projects, and deep-linked social learning-based leadership blogs, where program participants refect on what they’re learning and how they are applying the concepts learned back at work.”

Also, 100 new managers have started the Manager Essentials program to earn certifcation in best management practices. Bento boxes that have been created for leaders include:

>> High-potential Leader program

>> Manager Essentials

>> Triving In Change

>> Strengths Finder

>> Productivity and time management

>> I.T. skills

>> Crucial conversations

A “virtual team leadership” program was also instituted for all managers who have more than two remote employees. Seventy percent of all such managers have completed it; 49 percent said it was excellent and an ad- ditional 44 percent said it was above average.

ONWARD AND UPWARD

Cone has built the talent development team from one (himself) to six people (“they are great,” he says) in less than three years. He also has developed and led the design and implementation of the global learning management system and blended training strategy. Using bento boxes, he has increased online usage from 4,800 to 35,000 courses completed annually.

“It would have been easy to abandon e-learning” afer the frst aborted attempt, Cone now admits. “But I’m optimistic today, because the feedback I’ve been getting from learning and development peers is good. They’re saying that what we’re doing makes sense. The bento-box metaphor works. So we’ve got even better things planned such as Gamifcation, Adaptive Learning and Tin Can. We’re just trying to be innovative and continually adapt to our 60 percent Millennial demographic.”

While 2013 will be remembered in history as the year that the Patent Protection and Affordable Care Act was rolled out (sort of), there were also some seminal events transpiring and philosophies changing in the corporate learning arena.

Certainly, mobile learning has impacted our daily lives in many ways, not the least of which is learning. The new Experience API (xAPI) makes it possible to collect data about the wide range of experiences a person has (online and offline). Then there’s gamification, which is to today’s learner what the textbook was to yesterday’s learner. According to Gartner, 70 percent of all global companies will have a gamification app by as soon as next year.

One of the other biggest advancements is that learning professionals are finally realizing the value of Big Data, as advanced by Jenny Dearborn, the featured writer in our August/September issue.

“Big Data is the next big thing,” she wrote. “Data analysis is the key, because Big Data without powerful analysis is just simple math with lots of numbers. By triangulating data sources, you can chart out the impact of your programs.”

But Big Data is not the only key to the success of an organization, as Tony Robbins and Walter Rogers pointed out in our June/July issue. Effectively training salespeople is also imperative. “Leap-frog advancements in custom learning platform development enable the use of applications, animation, interaction and graphical reproduction that support the modality of choice,” we noted in that issue.

And now in this issue, we’re defining and bringing a concept called “connected learning” to life. The cover story (page 14) defines connected learning and reveals how its implementation can help your learning initiatives. A follow-up article discusses how the concept was implemented for one of Harvard’s executive education courses and the difference that connected learning has made (page 22).

The main takeaway from all those articles is that connected learning pushes organizations to higher levels of performance while developmentally stretching participants/learners. “And that’s a formula that face-to-face can’t match, with the potential to revolutionize talent development,” as our guest writer concludes.

This, too, has been a great year for the Elearning! Media Group, culminating with our “Best of Elearning!” awards program, highlighted in this issue. Earlier this year, we also celebrated the “Learning! 100” award-winners and an extremely successful Enterprise Learning Conference & Expo (ELCE) in Anaheim, Calif.

Competition in the “Best of Elearning!” program (article begins on page 27) has exploded. We are now tabulating almost 4,000 individual Web ballots per year, and we’ve honored more than 200 companies and more than 400 products over the past nine years.

We are on the cusp of a new year, and that means new ideas and concepts, new technology, and new challenges. Happy holidays to all our faithful readers from the staff of Elearning! and Government E-learning! magazines. Have a great 2014!

Customer service is a key requirement of e-learning products, according to voters in Elearning! Magazine’s “Best of 2007” Awards. GeoLearning’s Maestro 5.0 software ran away with the competition in the category of “Best On-Demand LMS.” It was far and away the top vote-getter of all category winners in the 2007 competition. The magazine’s readers and professionals from hundreds of organizations nominate and cast ballots via Elearning! Magazine’s Website for the best e-learning solutions providers across 11 product categories. Four categories resulted in ties. Published in Best of Elearning!

LearnCenter, GeoMaestro and Captivate were repeat winners in the 2008 “Best of Elearning!” awards competition, which ended in November.   LearnCenter from Learn.com was a repeat winner in the “Best Enterprise LMS” category. Finalists in that category were Outstart Evolution, Meridian’s Global LMS and Blackboard’s Learning Suite.  GeoMaestro from GeoLearning was also a repeat winner, in the “Best SaaS LMS” category, outdistancing GeoLearning’s Express, Learn.com’s LearnCenter On-Demand and Brisinger BGI’s LMS portal.
Adobe’s Captivate repeated in the “Best Simulation Solution” category for the second year in a row. Finalists in that category were Atlantic Link (Capture Point) and Outstart (SoftSim).    Winners were determined in a total of nine categories, with a tie in “Best Web Seminar Solution” between Citrix GoToMeeting and Cisco WebEx Meeting Center.  Finalists were named in four additional categories, but were too close to name a clear-cut winner. All finalists earned an Award of Excellence.

According to a recent Elearning! Summit poll conducted by this magazine, 61 percent of readers indicated that award recognition impacts their decision to consider or purchase from honored vendors. More than half also rely on word-of-mouth and referrals as sources of product information.

Votes were cast via Elearning! magazine’s Website. More than 847 nominations  were received from end-users and vendors. Voters were limited to one ballot per e-mail address, and vendors were only allowed to vote for their products once. (In no category did one vote decide the outcome.)
Here are all of this year’s honorees:
